The roots of Tae Kwon Do can be traced back 2,000 years in Korean history. Translated, it means "the art of kicking and punchingĦħ. As a method of self-defense, it does not incorporate weapons, but rather uses a coordinated effort of balance, flexibility, speed and power symbolized by the yin and yang. After the liberation of Korea in 1945, Tae Kwon Do was again enthusiastically practiced. By 1973 the First World Tae Kwon Do Championship was held in Seoul, attended by over thirty countries and in 1994 it was recognized by the international olympic committee. Today Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular martial arts and is practiced worldwide.
